In the history of NC gold prospecting many instances of gold discovery have been documented. As far back as the year 1799 a major gold discovery was documented on the Reed farm in the state of North Carolina. This particular discovery was of a 17 pound nugget found by a small boy by the name of Conrad Reed. The gold nugget was an amazing 17 pounds but there have been numerous other discoveries of similarly sized gold nuggets and even some that were well over 17 pounds. The largest recorded in NC was a staggering 25 pound nugget. In the case of the 17 pound nugget discovery this was used for a doorstop for several years before it was seen as valuable by the Reed family. This discovery also led other members of the family to inevitably search for gold around the Reed farm resulting in the Reed Gold Mine in North Carolina. This is an important gold mine to note because it was the United States’ first gold mine. The gold mine is located in Stanfield North Carolina.
